Is My Extinguisher Still Good?

Your extinguisher can remain in service if it meets the following criteria:

  • it has not been discharged

  • it was serviced within the last 6 years

  • it was hydrostatically tested within the last 12 years

Your extinguisher must be serviced if:

  • it has been discharged
  • it was new or last serviced 6 or more years ago (6 year maintenance required)

  • it was last hydrostatically tested 12 or more years ago (12 year hydrostatic test required)

Your extinguisher must be replaced if:

  • it has been damaged

  • it cannot be serviced because:

    • it has failed a hydrostatic test

    • the brand is obsolete

Checking when your extinguisher was last serviced:

All extinguishers will have a tag similar to the one pictured below on it. This will give you a date and if it was new, maintained or recharged on that date.

For some extinguishers such as a 2lb dry-chemical, it is more cost effective to replace it after discharge or at service intervals.
